Garnwen

Took an hour up Garnwen after the rain and gloom had cleared late afternoon. Lesser Redpolls were flying overhead and displaying, while the Tree Pipits have now gone silent, Whitethroats seem to be having a good year and swallows were hawking insects in numbers.

16 species of hoverfly were recorded with Sericomyia lappona being the best. Tree and Early Bumblebee were photographed. Other insects included the moths Adaina microdactyla and Eupoecilia angustana, the Conopid fly Sicus ferrugenieus and the Green Shieldbug.

 Early Bumblebee
 Tree Bumblebee
 Conopid Fly - Sicus ferruginieus
 Sericomyia lappona
 Green Sheildbug
 Anthophila fabriciana
Larval case - possibly Moth [Coleophora] or Beetle. I've put it on Irecord to see if anyone can shed some light on the identification, while I'll also do some research myself. Update - DJS [moth county recorder agrees with my initial suggested ID of Coleophora serratella].

Is it on salix? If so prob C. serratella.

No it was on some kind of ornamental Buddleja mixed in with a sycamore tree, but Elms were close. So I think C. serratella is the correct analysis [DJS agrees]
