Gilfach (west) [SS8487]

Saturday day was fine but Sunday was a wash out. Not an increase in hoverfly numbers, but my first Cheilosia albiplia (fem) for a few years, Also Eristalis tenax new for the year, Eristalis pertinax (7) the commonest species.

Hardly any other insects about. On the bird front the Llangynwyd Square rookery is up to 8 nests.

New season begins

 The hoverfly season started this weekend with visits to Gilfach (west) [SS8487] and Blaencaerau [SS8694]. 5 species were noted, the best being Melangyna lasiophthalma (fem), There were also singles of Syrphus torvus (fem) and Meliscaeva auricollis (fem). Commoner species were Eristalis pertinax (15) and Platycheirus albimanus (17).

Other insects emerging were the butterflies Brimstone, Peacock and Speckled Wood. Beetles in the shape of Kidney-spot Ladybird and all the usual bees,

On the bird front the first Chiffchaff (2) were in at Blaencaerau and the Rooks at Llangynwyd are up to 6 nests.
